Letter to the editor: When America was great

To the editor:

I have been hearing and seeing MAGA for some time now and I did not know what period it referred to. I just learned when America was great. In the embarrassing argument between presidents I learned: Donald Trump believes that America was great in the late 19th century when colonialism was at its zenith. It was a time when the United States was building the Panama Canal in a little Central American country and warring with a sadly reduced Spain to take over the Philippine Islands. (The European colonial powers had not yet started destroying each other in World Colonial War I).

Trump just made clear that he thinks Ukraine is a Third World country that should be bended-knee grateful for any assistance it can get from the most powerful nation on earth. (Yowsa Boss!). To try to gain some help ending their (our?) disastrous war against a modern colonial power, they should be willing to let us rape their resources like the blood diamonds of South Africa back in “great” times. Furthermore their brave and very capable elected leader, more popular than ours, should understand that he does not deserve the same respect due the most powerful man in the world. He should not ask for what he legitimately believes he needs to maintain his country and should let the real leaders of the world tell him what he needs. Of course his little country never was able to become a colonial power.

Once upon a time…
