Letter to the editor: Protect USAID

To the editor:

As a resident of Lawrence, I am deeply concerned about the dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and its detrimental impact on our community. USAID has been instrumental in supporting Kansas farmers, including those in our region, by purchasing approximately $2 billion worth of surplus commodities like wheat and grain annually.

The abrupt cessation of these purchases has left farmers like Vance and Louise Ehmke facing financial uncertainty, with no guaranteed market for their grain.

Furthermore, Kansas State University and other institutions have relied on USAID grants for critical research, including agricultural innovation and disease prevention. The suspension of these funds jeopardizes ongoing projects and the livelihoods of researchers and students.

The dismantling of USAID is not just an economic setback; it is an assault on the values that make America a beacon of hope and opportunity. Supporting our neighbors, both near and far, reflects the compassion and leadership that define our nation. The cost to taxpayers is minimal compared to the immense benefits reaped by our farmers, researchers and the global community.

I urge Sens. Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, along with Rep. Tracey Mann, to stand firm against this manufactured crisis and restore USAID’s vital programs. Protecting USAID is protecting Kansas — our economy, our values and our future.

Michael Martin,

Lawrence
