To the editor:

Yes, huge kudos to the city road crews in helping to make Lawrence streets drivable after the recent snow and ice storms (“How city’s road crews battled an arctic blast,” Jan. 12 Journal–World). Thanks too to those homeowners and rental property folks for clearing the sidewalks around their property. Would that all property owners would be so considerate!

Just exactly who within the city government is responsible for forcing property owners to clear their sidewalks (Ordinance Number 8324)? I’ve seen a number of children and elderly having to either trudge through steep and slippery snow along uncleared sidewalks or dare to walk along the cleared but still slippery streets. More enforcement of this ordinance is needed before someone is critically injured.
