Letter to the editor: We deserve answers

To the editor:

I would like to know the positions of my representatives in Congress on myriad issues. Some of those issues include what they think about the firing of federal employees (including at Haskell, DOJ and USAID), the unilateral decision to freeze funds Congress appropriated (including cancer research at KU), their position on Ukraine funding and what specific programs they intend to vote to cut or support in the reconciliation process that Congress must complete before March 14 lest the government shut down.

I have repeatedly called the offices of Rep. Tracey Mann and Sens. Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran. Someone in Mann’s Manhattan office finally answered the phone. I asked when and where Mann will be holding a town hall meeting in the evening or on a weekend — announced in advance. Mann’s representative said they had recently held some in Western Kansas (all during the day and over a 3.5 hour drive from Lawrence), but he had no idea when Mann would be having one in the eastern half of Kansas. Couldn’t even guess. I left messages with the same question at three local offices, each, of Moran and Marshall. No one has returned those calls.

I encourage others to call and request an immediate town hall with each of these men, in or close to Lawrence, announced in advance to the public, held during evening or weekend hours and at a large venue, so all can attend. We deserve to know the answers to these important questions.

Jan Karlin,

Lawrence
