Letter to the editor: An open letter to Sen. Marshall

To the editor:

To Sen. Roger Marshall, MD:

I hope you will consider returning home soon to resume the practice of medicine. Since the country is now governed entirely by executive order, Congress is clearly unnecessary (I hesitate to call it, as DOGE would, “waste”). Your services as a physician are needed now more than ever, not least because there is a resurgence of measles. Sadly, many of our fellow Kansans have fallen for the misinformation coming from the Health and Human Services secretary you confirmed, and are failing to vaccinate their children (on that point, it would be helpful if you would very publicly correct that misinformation, please).

I regret that, on your return to medicine, you may find that your services, especially in rural counties, will sometimes go unpaid. This is due to upcoming cuts in Medicaid that you may have heard about. Still, as you certainly know, unpaid care of indigent patients is an old story in the healing arts and one that should give you pride and ease your sleep.

Dan V. Johnson,

Lawrence
