Letter to the editor: Flip and flop

To the editor:

Sean Hannity and Fox News have been leading the right wing’s assault on Kamala Harris’ shift toward the middle in the general election as shameless “flip-flopping.” This is a time-honored post-primary maneuver, in her case separated by four years and a learning term in office. True, she has “flipped” on a number of issues, but where has she “flopped,” with the implication that she has reverted to her Marxist roots?

At the risk of replicating Fox News’ habit of “mirroring” Democrats’ talking points, it’s fair to ask why Fox and other right-wing media outlets have overlooked VP candidate JD Vance’s egregious “flip.”

“Trump makes people I care about afraid. Immigrants, Muslims, etc. Because of this I find him reprehensible. God wants better of us,” and “Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us.” (Vance tweets, October 2016, per CNN). As a Senate candidate in 2021, the tune had changed to: “… I ask folks not to judge me based on what I said in 2016, because I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things [The tweets were deleted.] and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy.” (Fox News, July 2021). He, too, has not flopped but has doubled down.

Apparently it’s up to the “state-run media mob” (Hannity, every night of the week — state-run?!) to cover this flip.

Paul Enos,
