Letter to the editor: Mistaken on abortion, Bible

To the editor:

Eugene Robinson’s tour of the Bible (“Trump’s big Bible grift is going to backfire,” Journal-World, March 31) missed a few points of interest. His selected passages and commentary assure readers that abortion “is one issue Jesus never addressed.” Although this is a fashionable destination, it is a questionable one.

For Robinson’s assertion to be correct, abortion cannot be murder, for Jesus addressed murder. In fact, Jesus addressed murder in the Sermon on the Mount, one of our tour stops. Robinson simply assumes abortion is not murder. He provides no argument as to why it shouldn’t be considered murder. He argues in a circle and drives on.

His final stop takes us to Matthew 25. He finds here, “clear instructions about what a righteous immigration policy should be.” Unfortunately, he quotes the wrong set of verses to prove his point (i.e., verses 42-43 rather than 35-36). More importantly he omits verse 45: “Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.'” These words mandate the protection of the unborn. Apparently Jesus did address abortion.
