Letter to the editor: Locker room ministry
To the editor:
1957. In triple overtime, North Carolina defeated Kansas for the national championship. In the post-game locker room, Wilt Chamberlain’s head was between his legs. The Rev. Dale Turner, my predecessor at Plymouth Church and team chaplain, laid a comforting hand on Wilt’s shoulders. In Dale’s words, as told to me, “Wilt felt he had let the whole team down.” A moment of ministry transpired between two extraordinary men. During Monday night’s reprise of these two legendary teams, this preacher and basketball player were on my mind.
