Letter to the editor: A stain on our state

To the editor:

In 2020 the Kansas Republican Party blessed the residents of the 2nd Congressional District with their latest GOP wunderkind, Rep. Jake LaTurner. Now, less than a week into his term in Congress, Rep. LaTurner decided to join a group of his fellow Republicans in a pointless effort to stymie the congressional verification of the electoral college vote that gives the presidency to Joe Biden. They did this by lodging objections to the validity of the electoral process in several states. Never mind the fact that over the last two months those elections have all proven to be legitimate by numerous recounts, investigations and challenges in the court. This wasn’t done in defense of free and fair elections. In reality, the purpose of this exercise in futility was to lend credence to President Donald Trump’s continuing delusional and baseless claims that he had been cheated out of a second term in office.

When Congress reconvened to complete the verification process that had been interrupted by the violent and deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol by Trump’s band of insurrectionists that day, Rep. LaTurner and his fellows continued to lodge those objections. By doing this, Rep. LaTurner, along with newly elected Sen. Roger Marshall and others, has placed a stain on the Kansas congressional delegation that will remain forever in our nation’s history.

Apparently, it only took a few days for them to forget that their oath of allegiance was to the U.S. Constitution, not to a failed, corrupt and disloyal president.
