Letter to the editor: Speaking truth

To the editor:

We are immersed in a great challenge — for many of us, maybe the greatest challenge of our lifetime. This is a time in which many may find themselves engaged in reflection about the leadership of our country. To that end, I offer these words from highly respected former Republican President Theodore Roosevelt:

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

If one desires to be able to claim credit for what happens during one’s watch, one must also be willing to accept responsibility for what happens during one’s watch. That is one measure of true leadership; another is speaking truth.
