Letter to the editor: What we can do

To the editor:

I realize our president is a compulsive liar. He has spewed so many untruths so often that I generally react with limited outrage to his latest productions. But our president has out-Trumped himself with his colossally bizarre claim on July 8 (Washington Post online) regarding his “environment leadership.” Donald Trump has done more than I even thought possible to sabotage our already inadequate efforts to deal with global warming. His ignorance and his pompous rejection of any information that does not support his beliefs are as sad as they are outrageous. When our children and grandchildren look back with amazement and fury they surely will focus some of their wrath on this president and those who support him.

What can we do while we wait for a competent president? Plan to vote our convictions; we need office holders who believe in science and who want to take action to help the earth. Providing financial and other support for their campaigns would be a real help. Support organizations such as the Sierra Club who are actively involved in the fight to combat climate change. Live our own lives fully aware of the choices we make in what we buy and how we use resources. Be sure that our state and our city are doing all they can to reduce carbon emissions. This is not addressed in the proposed Lawrence-Douglas County Plan 2040 (see Sustainability Action Network newsletter of July 9 (paradigm@ixks.com). It should be!

Joe Douglas,

Lawrence
