Letter to the editor: Library adopts bad policy

To the editor:

While I admire the fiscal largesse of the public library (“Library to get rid of fines,” Dec. 18), I suspect that the library board will soon regret this decision. With Lawrence’s large transient population, many library patrons may feel little urgency in returning their borrowed items and opt instead to throw them in the trash when departing Lawrence. Moreover, modest fines for overdue items do not “disadvantage low-income people,” but instead remind them of the importance of personal responsibility. Since this library policy appears short-sighted, I will think twice before donating again to the Library’s Friends and Foundation.

Ray Finch,

Lawrence
