Services for Constance G. “Connie” Newby, 65, rural Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery.Mrs. Newby died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at her home.She was born March 28, 1943, in Topeka, the daughter of Albert William and Winnogene “Gene” Matney. She was a lifelong resident of the area. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School and attended business school in Topeka. She worked for Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Hudson Oil Co., both in Kansas City, as a bookkeeper from 1963 to 1975. Mrs. Newby was also a homemaker. She was a member of the Lecompton Chapel, where she volunteered in various capacities for more than 25 years. She traveled to Africa and Central America as a missionary and served as president of the Lawrence Women’s Aglow chapter. She was a prayer warrior who enjoyed reading the Bible, sharing the word of God and fellowship.She married Leonard C. Newby on Sept. 19, 1970. They shared 39 years of marriage. He survives, of the home.Other survivors include three daughters, Christina Fiebich and husband Glen, St. Paul, Minn., Rachel Ricley and husband Ron, Lecompton, and Deborah, Lawrence; two sons, Jesse and wife Stacey, Bloomfield, Ind., and Nanpet Mutfwang and wife Clarissa, Hogansville, Ga.; two sisters, Bonnie Caylor, Iola, and Sally Reno, Lawrence; and 12 grandchildren Tommy Newby, Darius Mutfwang, Jessa Newby, Noah Mutfwang, Hannah Mutfwang, Katie Ricley, Ethan Ricley, David Newby, Brenin Fiebich, Jonette Ricley, Benjamin Ricley and Olivia Fiebich.Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until the service time Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Center, sent in care of the funeral home.Online condolences may be sent at rumsey-yost.com.
