Gov. Laura Kelly traveled to Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas, to kick off legal sports betting in Kansas on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022. Kelly placed the first legal sports wager in Kansas, betting $15 – the same as Patrick Mahomes’ jersey number – on the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LVII this upcoming football season.

Gov. Laura Kelly announced Monday that she will donate her Super Bowl sports bet winnings of $165 to the 15 and Mahomies Foundation.

The Patrick Mahomes’ nonprofit is dedicated to improving the lives of children.

Last summer, Kelly signed bipartisan legislation to legalize sports betting in Kansas. A week before football season began, she made the state’s first legal sports bet at Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas, wagering $15 dollars in honor of Patrick Mahomes on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl.

“It turns out the Chiefs are always a good bet,” Kelly said in a news release. “I chose my wager in September because I believe in Patrick Mahomes and the team. They are the reason I won this bet, and I’m more than happy to give my winnings to support all the good work Patrick is doing throughout the Kansas City community.”

15 and the Mahomies supports Kansas organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters Kansas; Harvesters Community Food Network; and the Sunflower House in Shawnee.
