Douglas County has finished counting votes for the evening and has released unofficial vote totals for the county. Here’s a look at major races.
Douglas County Commission expansion.
Voters are asked to decide whether the Douglas County Commission should expand to five members, up from three today. A yes vote is a vote for expansion.
Yes: 25,546 (61%); No: 16,261 (39%)
Douglas County Commission First District
Democrat Patrick Kelly is seeking re-election in the district that covers an area primarily west of Massachusetts Street, north of Bob Billings Parkway and east of Wakarusa Drive.
Patrick Kelly (D): 9,174 (80%); Justin Spiehs (R): 1,759 (15%); Steve Jacob (L): 455 (4%)
Kansas Governor
Democrat Laura Kelly is seeking re-election, but faces a challenge from Republican Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
Statewide the race is too close to call, but Kelly easily won Douglas County. Kelly: 33,220 (75%); Schmidt, 10,229 (23%)
Kansas Attorney General
Republican Kris Kobach is making another attempt at statewide office in this race that is wide open due to Schmidt’s decision to run for governor. Lawrence attorney Chris Mann is the Democratic nominee.
Statewide the race is too close to call, but Mann easily won Douglas County. Mann, 33,712 (77%); Kobach 10,193 (23%)
Legislative Oversight Amendment
Voters will decide whether to change the Kansas Constitution to give the Kansas Legislature more authority to object to executive branch decisions. A yes vote is a vote to enact the amendment.
Statewide this amendment was narrowly losing in the 11 p.m. hour. Voters solidly rejected the amendment in Douglas County.
No: 30,021 (71%); Yes: 12,449 (29%)
Sheriff’s Amendment
Voters will decide whether to change the Kansas Constitution to ensure that the position of sheriff remains an elected position in counties that currently elect their sheriffs. It also will create new provision on how a sheriff can be removed from office. A yes vote is a vote to enact the amendment.
Statewide voters were favoring the amendment with about 61% of the vote in the 11 p.m. hour. In Douglas County, though, voters rejected it.
No: 23,688 (57%); Yes 18,240 (44%)
Other races: Kansas House District No. 117 is a new district representing southern Eudora and parts of Johnson County. Republican Adam Turk has claimed a victory over Democrat Courtney Tripp, 5,517 to 5,086, according to unofficial totals from the Kansas Secretary of State’s office. Every other member of the Douglas County delegation in the Kansas House of Representatives is on track to be re-elected, with the Lawrence delegation facing no opposition in their races.
