Lawrence’s Mann holds narrow lead over Kobach in race to become state’s next attorney general

Current Lawrence resident and former Lawrence police office Chris Mann was in a tight contest to become the state’s top law enforcement leader.

Mann, a Democrat, held a narrow 4 point lead over Republican incumbent Kris Kobach in the race to become the state’s next attorney general. At about 10:15 p.m., Mann had about 52% of the vote to Kobach’s 48%.

The Associated Press had not called the race as of 10:15 p.m., and about 11% of the vote remained to be counted.

The race between Mann and Kobach is a rematch from four years ago, a contest that Kobach won to keep the Republicans long-held control of the attorney general’s office.

Mann has run a campaign that highlights the need for the attorney general to be less partisan. He said the office should focus on supporting law enforcement, providing training, fighting fraud and better funding domestic violence shelters across the state.

Kobach — a rural Douglas County resident who has been one of leading national voices on the need for tighter immigration enforcement and changes to promote election security — campaigned on “proven law-and-order leadership,” and touted the state’s lowest crime rate in 56 years.
