State Rep. Mike Amyx, of Lawrence, has filed for reelection.

Amyx, a Democrat, is a three-term incumbent House member in Kansas’ 45th District.

“It has been my honor and pleasure to serve the 45th District in Topeka,” Amyx said in his announcement. “But there is still much to accomplish. In a highly divided house, I have been successful in working across the aisle while holding on firmly to my beliefs. Much can be achieved by working together for the benefit of all Kansans, but there is so much left to do.”

During his tenure in the Kansas Legislature, Amyx worked to acquire state funding for the widening of the South Lawrence Trafficway to increase safety. He currently is ranking minority member of the General Government Budget Committee, and also serves on the Local Government, Higher Education Budget and Water Committees.

“Now that the State of Kansas is back in the black, budget-wise, I believe it is time to begin returning the excess taxes accrued to our taxpayers,” Amyx said. “We need to take a deep look at property taxes and find a fair and impartial method of taxation that will benefit all while maintaining a common-sense balance in our budget.”

Amyx was first elected to public office as a Lawrence city commissioner in 1983 and was reelected six more times. He was elected as Lawrence mayor a record six times. Between terms as a city commissioner, he served five years as a Douglas County commissioner, including two terms as the chair of the commission.

Until recently, he was a co-owner, along with his wife, Marilyn, of Amyx Barber Shop in downtown Lawrence.

As of Friday, no one else had filed to run in the 45th District.
