Program to pay fines with school supplies nets more than $750 in supplies for Lawrence students this year

Lawrence Municipal Court's “School Supplies for Fines” program allows participants to bring in $15 worth of approved school supplies to get a $50 credit toward traffic or parking tickets.
Lawrence residents have purchased more than $750 worth of school supplies through the Lawrence Municipal Court’s “School Supplies for Fines” program.
Now in its third year, the program allows participants who have outstanding fines to bring $15 worth of approved school supplies and the receipt to the court in exchange for a $50 credit toward fines for traffic infractions or parking tickets.
The supplies go directly to the Lawrence Schools Foundation. The City of Lawrence said that 34 Lawrence residents participated in the program this year and that many of them went above the $15 minimum donation, contributing a total of over $750 worth of school supplies.
The Lawrence Schools Foundation, via the program, received 151 boxes of crayons, 60 boxes of pencils, 65 sets of markers and 113 notebooks.
The foundation said in a Facebook post that the supplies would help ensure that students in the Lawrence school district have the supplies they need.
“Because of your kindness and contributions, countless students will be better equipped for the school year ahead,” another post from the foundation said.
