An incident Monday that prompted a brief email from the Lawrence High School principal to staff and student families about a vague “safety concern” involved a student making “concerning statements and generalized threats online that indicated a mental health issue,” Lawrence police clarified Tuesday.

While LHS Principal Quentin Rials’ email provided few details, Sgt. Drew Fennelly said that the student had been identified and contacted and that police had verified that there were no active threats to LHS or Billy Mills Middle School.

“It took some investigation to determine where the statements came from, and required us working with USD 497 Information Technology on identifying the source of the comments, which is why we ended up at multiple schools,” Fennelly told the Journal-World Tuesday.

“Throughout the day everyone on both campuses remained safe,” Rials wrote in the Monday email.
