Lawrence public schools to be closed on Tuesday because of bitterly cold wind chills

Due to safety concerns from cold wind chills in the forecast, Lawrence public schools will be closed Tuesday, the district announced on Monday.

In an email Monday afternoon, district spokesperson Julie Boyle said that all school activities would be canceled and all district buildings would be closed. She said that the wind chill on Tuesday could be 10 to 20 degrees below zero, which could be dangerous for children who walk to school or take the bus.

“We know that we have children who walk to school and others who wait outside for buses,” Boyle said in the email. “These dangerously cold wind chills expected Tuesday morning could pose concerns with the potential for hypothermia and frostbite if safety precautions are not taken.”

Boyle said that the forecast for the rest of the week was not as cold and the district did not anticipate having to close schools on Wednesday.
