The Lawrence school board will meet on Tuesday at the school district offices, 110 McDonald Dr.

The Lawrence school board will hear a report from Native American Student Services next week about the tutoring, cultural programs and other support it provides to hundreds of students in the district.

NASS will present the report to the board at its regular meeting, which is on Tuesday of next week instead of the usual Monday because of Indigenous Peoples Day. The board’s agenda packet says 376 students in the district are currently “verified” with NASS, and that the Lawrence school district has American Indian and Alaska Native students from more than 73 tribal affiliations currently enrolled.

No action will be taken following the presentation, which will be given by NASS coordinator David Farve.

In other business, school board members will:

• Consider appointing board member GR Gordon-Ross to be the board’s voting delegate for the 2024 Kansas Association of School Boards annual business meeting. This year’s convention will be held Nov. 15-17 at the Wichita Convention Center.

• Consider adopting an updated board policy on nepotism. The updated policy states that “the superintendent shall make reasonable efforts to determine whether a candidate for employment is related to or resides with a board member or district administrator.”

The board will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. The meeting will also be available via the school district’s YouTube channel. Residents who want to share comments with the board may sign up in advance by emailing PublicComment@usd497.org by 6 p.m. Monday and may participate in person or via Webex video/phone conferencing.
