Outgoing Superintendent Anthony Lewis has appointed Chief Operations Officer Larry Englebrick to serve as deputy superintendent of the Lawrence school district, effective immediately, pending school board approval, according to a Monday news release from the district.

The change in responsibilities comes in the wake of multiple administrative positions opening up — including Lewis, who is leaving for a job in North Carolina, Chief Academic Officer Patrick Kelly, who retired last month, and DEI leader Cynthia Johnson, who resigned last month — and as part of an ongoing budget planning process, the release said.

Englebrick joined the district as executive director of facilities and operations in March of 2021. He was promoted to interim chief operations officer in 2021-2022 and to COO in 2022.

Englebrick previously served as the director of facilities and operations for the Kansas City, Missouri, schools for 11 years, taught at the high-school level in the Shawnee Mission schools for three years and served as the Kansas State Department of Education’s deputy commissioner of the division of school innovations for one year.

Lewis also announced Monday that Jana Craig-Hare, director of data and assessment, will serve as executive director of curriculum and instruction, effective immediately, pending school board approval. Craig-Hare joined the district in 2022 after serving four years as director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment for Baldwin City, where she also acted as interim assistant principal of Baldwin High School. Prior to joining the Baldwin City schools, Craig-Hare served 13 years as an assistant research professor and associate director of ALTEC at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.
