Southwest Middle School on Wednesday received a report that a student brought a gun to school, but district officials have determined that no gun was brought to school and there was no threat to students or staff, the district told the Journal-World on Thursday.
District administrators worked with staff and the police-assigned school resource officer to investigate the report, which included talking with students and their families. The administration determined “that there was no gun at school and no credible threat of harm to the school community,” Lawrence school district spokesperson Julie Boyle told the Journal-World in an email.
Boyle added in the email that she appreciates students and families continuing to report safety concerns to their school so the district can immediately investigate them. She said student and staff safety is the district’s first priority.
According to the district website, if there is a safety concern, contact the student’s principal. Each of the Lawrence school and district websites has a Tip Line for reporting of safety concerns. Families can also contact the Kansas School Safety Hotline at 1-877-626-8203 for anonymous reporting of safety concerns.
The Journal-World inquired with district officials about the alleged threat after parents at the school reached out to the newspaper seeking information about the threat’s authenticity.
