A student at Billy Mills Middle School allegedly made a threat against the school on Tuesday, but school leaders said students were not immediately at risk.

In a message to families, Billy Mills Principal Andrew Taylor and Assistant Principal Kady Carson said students reported to school staff that another student had made the threatening comment. After staff was informed, the school worked with a school resource officer to meet with the student and a parent to investigate the matter, which resulted in a police report being filed.

The administrators said the comments from the student did not pose a risk to other students. Additionally, while noting that student disciplinary actions are confidential, the school said it had “initiated appropriate action” based on its student handbook and district policies.

“As you know threats of any nature are not conducive to the learning environment we strive to provide at Billy Mills Middle School,” the administrators said in the email. “The safety of students and staff is our top priority. While this remark itself did not pose a risk to student safety, poor choices like this cause concern.”

In the email, Taylor and Carson also said the school works with students to help them understand appropriate ways to express their emotions.

Lt. David Ernst of the Lawrence Police Department confirmed that LPD responded to a report of a student making a threat toward the school and that a school resource officer spoke with the student and a parent.

However, Ernst did not provide additional details, and he said the incident was still under investigation.
