Free State High School Associate Principal Steve Heffernan plans to return to a teaching position for the 2019-2020 school year, the Lawrence school district announced in a news release Wednesday.

He’ll also continue to coach cross-country.

High school administrators can no longer serve as coaches because of a district policy change in 2018; however, Heffernan had been allowed to coach during this school year because his son was a senior on the team, according to the release.

Heffernan taught science for 16 years before becoming associate principal in 2013, according to the release. He hopes to return to administration in the future.

The position change is still pending school board approval.
