An elementary school student was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning while walking to school at Prairie Park Elementary.
911-connected mobile app PulsePoint said Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical was dispatched just outside the elementary school at 7:54 a.m., and according to a social media post from the district, the student’s parent was contacted immediately following the incident. The student was transported to receive medical treatment with minor injuries.
“We are grateful for the quick response and support from staff, family members, and first responders during this situation,” Denise Johnson, principal of Prairie Park, said in a message shared with families. “The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we appreciate everyone’s care and concern.”
The Lawrence Police Department said in a social media post that after investigators talked to the driver, they did not believe the driver was impaired or speeding.
“The glare of the sun may have been a contributing factor in the crash,” the post said.
