A woman told Lawrence police that her ex-boyfriend and father of her child sent her threatening text messages the day before he barged into her apartment and shot her new boyfriend in the abdomen, leaving the man with life-threatening injuries.

“Someone is dying,” the woman reported to emergency dispatch in a phone call after the Jan. 23 shooting.

The woman’s statements are part of a probable cause affidavit in support of the arrest of Temujin Jernigan, 24, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

According to allegations in the affidavit, which have not been proved in court, the woman shared a child with Jernigan, who she said “gets upset” when other men are around the child. Jernigan and the woman had broken up two months previously, in November 2025, and the woman had since begun a relationship with the shooting victim.

Prior to the shooting, the woman was at her apartment with the new boyfriend and her daughter. The boyfriend left the Hawks Pointe complex just south of West Seventh and Florida streets to go to McDonald’s. Subsequently, the front door swung open and Jernigan barged in and stated “So this is what we are on?” The boyfriend then returned, at which point Jernigan reportedly pulled a small silver pistol from his pocket, shot the boyfriend and ran out the door.

The woman told police she ran after Jerningan and saw him leave in a green Honda. The affidavit, which has most names redacted, indicates that police spoke to two people who witnessed the shooting. Another witness listed on the document is a 6-month-old baby.

Jernigan was arrested the same day after about a four-hour search.

As the Journal-World reported, the injured 23-year-old man was flown by helicopter to KU hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. He was said to be in critical condition and on a ventilator. No information was available Monday on his current condition.

Jernigan entered a diversion agreement on a criminal threat charge in November of 2024. In that case, he was ordered not to use or possess guns. He was charged with criminal threat again the following year, and that case is also ongoing.

Meanwhile, Jernigan is accused of possibly playing a role in a 61-year-old woman’s overdose death. Nicki Hedgecock, of Lawrence, died on Aug. 28, 2024, of what her autopsy report describes as “acute cocaine intoxication.” According to an arrest affidavit, which does not mention Hedgecock by name, Jernigan is the person who found Hedgecock deceased after being at her apartment the night before. A relative of Hedgecock’s at a Topeka correctional facility told police that she believed Jernigan supplied the cocaine based on a message from Hedgecock to her that read “Tymn gave me some trashy white girl.” The relative told police that “Tymn” was a nickname for Jernigan and that “trashy white girl” was a reference to “bad cocaine.”

Jernigan was not charged in the death, but following a police search of his and Hedgecock’s phones, he faces one count of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and six counts of unlawful manufacture, distribution, cultivation or possession of a controlled substance using a communication facility (a phone).

The affidavit related to Temujin Jernigan’s arrest in a drug case is heavily redacted.

Though the arrest affidavit was released in the drug case, it was heavily redacted, with 10 of the 14 pages blacked out. Court records indicate that the state requested only that birth dates and phone numbers be redacted. Publicly available court records do not indicate the defense’s position on the release of the affidavit.

Jernigan, who is in custody on a $1 million bond, is scheduled to appear again April 15 in Douglas County District Court for a status conference. The sheriff’s office generally does not release mugshots of defendants unless/until they have been convicted.
