20-year-old Lawrence man seriously injured after striking unoccupied police car on 1-70

A young man was seriously injured late Thursday night after he crashed his Jeep into an unoccupied police vehicle on the Kansas Turnpike near a Lawrence exit.
The accident came close to injuring three Lawrence police officers and shut down portions of the interstate, causing traffic to be rerouted.
The crash occurred just before midnight near Exit 202 in the westbound lanes of Interstate-70. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Creighton Daggett, 20, of Lawrence, was driving a 1999 Jeep Wrangler and struck the rear of the unoccupied 2026 Dodge Durango that was blocking traffic in one lane of the three-lane roadway. Daggett’s Jeep then went into the median and struck a barrier wall.
Daggett suffered injuries suspected to be serious and was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was wearing a seat belt, according to KHP.
Friday afternoon, the Lawrence Police Department said in a news release that the patrol vehicle that was hit was blocking traffic on I-70. Officers were directing traffic off I-70 at mile marker 202 because a semi had crashed earlier and was blocking the interstate near mile marker 198. The officers were not in their patrol vehicles, which were already in place with flashing lights to detour motorists, the release said; the officers were also in reflective vests and using flashlights and hand signals to direct traffic.
One officer was turned away from the oncoming Jeep while getting supplies from her trunk and did not see the Jeep coming, the release said. Another officer yelled for her to get out of the way as he ran toward, then jumped, the median’s concrete barrier. When hit, the patrol vehicle spun around, then came to a rest just feet before hitting the third officer, the release said. The Jeep then hit the concrete barrier and came to rest about 10 feet from the initial impact.
Unlike KHP, the police did not name Daggett in their release but said that his serious injuries were not considered life-threatening. He was communicating with officers on scene immediately after the crash, police said.
Both cars were towed from the scene with significant damage, according to KHP.
“We do not know if impairment was a factor,” the police release said. KHP is conducting the crash investigation.
