Lawrence police suspect that a teenager was intoxicated when she crashed her car on Iowa Street Monday night, closing down one of the city’s main thoroughfares for an hour as officers worked the scene.

Police said in a social media post Tuesday that the 17-year-old driver was speeding north on Iowa Street around 10 p.m. when she hit the guardrail on the east side of Iowa, went across all lanes of traffic and ended up stuck in the west side guardrail under the Irving Hill Road Bridge. Her car was the only one involved.

The girl was walking around when officers arrived, but they said she had a significant cut on her forehead. She was taken to the hospital to be treated, then to the Juvenile Detention Center, suspected of driving under the influence.
