A Lawrence boy is scheduled to stand trial in late summer for alleged sex crimes against a 4-year-old girl.

Douglas County Judge Stacey Donovan on Thursday set an Aug. 3 trial date for the boy, who was 14 at the time of the alleged offenses on Nov. 17, 2024. The boy faces one count of rape and one count of aggravated criminal sodomy.

The young girl reported the incidents to her family, who alerted law enforcement and medical professionals. According to the limited court records that are available in juvenile proceedings, the boy has been in and out of juvenile detention pending the case. He is currently on house arrest and is represented by attorney Branden Smith.

Juvenile trials are fairly rare in Douglas County, though one recently occurred in December, when a 17-year-old was acquitted of aggravated assault.
