A Lawrence man was arrested on suspicion of DUI early Wednesday morning after driving the wrong way on Kansas Highway 10, and the sheriff is looking for additional witnesses to the incident.
Just after midnight, Douglas County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to K-10 near the U.S. Highway 59 and Iowa Street exit in connection with a wrong-way driver traveling east in the westbound lanes, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
The silver Nissan Maxima driven by Nicolas Rios Cano, 35, of Lawrence, was located by a Eudora police officer, and the vehicle eventually stopped near the East 1900 Road ramp, the release said. Cano was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and reckless driving.
Before stopping, deputies and the Eudora officer witnessed five vehicles that were forced to swerve out of the way as Cano traveled along the road, including two semi-trailers. The sheriff’s office has asked anyone who may have had to take evasive action on the road at that time to call dispatch at 785-843-0250.
