A man evaded arrest Wednesday night after running from Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies in a car before crashing into a wall and then running away on foot.

The man’s identity, however, is known and his passenger was left behind and was arrested on warrants.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop near the intersection of Seventh Street and Lawrence Avenue in a 2004 Cadillac DeVille, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. The deputy was making the stop because the driver was believed to be wanted. The driver fled the scene but crashed into a barrier wall about a block away near Sixth Street and Schwarz Road.

The crash popped the car’s tire and the driver fled the scene on foot. Deputies deployed a K-9 patrol service dog and drones to search the area but the man was able to escape by running through backyards in the area, the release said.

The release did not identify the suspect but said he was known to law enforcement and deputies would submit an affidavit for his arrest to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.

The passenger of the vehicle, Camron James O’Connell, 21, of Lawrence, was arrested on outstanding warrants from Bourbon County, Kansas. O’Connell is wanted in connection with probation violations for convictions of one count each of domestic battery and violating a protective order, both misdemeanors.
