An extension ladder leans against a power line, causing electrical arcs and intermittent fires on June 12, 2025, in the 1600 block of West 15th Street.
A person was taken to a hospital Thursday after what was described as a “long fall” from a ladder near electrical lines.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical crews responded at 10:34 a.m. to a greek house in the 1600 block of West 15th Street after receiving a report of a person having fallen into a live electrical line, said LDCFM Chief of Staff McKenzi Ezell.
When crews arrived they found an extension ladder resting against power lines between two greek residences, causing electrical arcs and intermittent fires, Ezell said.
The individual who had fallen was taken to a regional hospital for treatment. Ezell did not specify if the person had been electrocuted but described the incident as a “long fall.” Ezell said that Evergy was able to remotely shut off the power for crews to work safely in the area.
A spokesperson for Evergy said that the incident caused an outage that affected about 1,000 people and that crews were able to restore power to the area around 1 p.m.
