A 33-year-old man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder following a stabbing at the Lawrence homeless shelter.
Police were called to the Lawrence Community Shelter, 3655 E. 25th St., at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. There they found a 41-year-old man, identified in the charging document as Justin Duane Cheatum Lyle, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Officers quickly located the man witnesses said was involved — later identified as Ryan Brandon Beaver — and took him into custody without incident. Officers also reportedly recovered the weapon, a knife, used in the incident.
Lyle was taken to an area trauma center to receive treatment for his injuries, which were described as critical. He is now in stable condition and expected to survive, the release said.
Beaver’s address is listed in the Douglas County Jail log as the homeless shelter. He is scheduled to make his first appearance at 3 p.m. Monday in Douglas County District Court.
