Two women have been charged in connection with a shooting in downtown Lawrence in April that damaged the windows of a local business.

The women, Demetria Myerick Warner Wooden, 30, of Lawrence, and Lakeisha Breeann Warner Bass, 36, of Raymore, Missouri, are each charged with one misdemeanor count of discharging a firearm within the city limits and one misdemeanor count of interfering with law enforcement. Warner Wooden is additionally charged with one felony count of criminal damage for allegedly damaging a window, wall and car tire at D&D Tires, 1000 Vermont St.

The charges are in connection with an incident on April 12 around 1 a.m. at the intersection of 10th and Massachusetts streets, as the Journal-World reported.

Police said in a post on social media the day after the shooting that several shots were fired during what witnesses described as a fight between a man and a woman. More shots were fired as a car pulled up and then left with two women inside. Police recovered two types of shell casing from the scene.

Police later located the women believed to be involved and found a firearm in their vehicle that was consistent with some of the shell casings found at the scene. One of the women had blood on her consistent with having been in a fight. Neither of the women was cooperative, police said, and they were later released.

Both Warner Bass and Warner Wooden were booked into the Douglas County jail on Wednesday and were released on own-recognizance bonds, meaning they were not required to pay any money to be released from jail. They are both scheduled to appear in court on July 9 for a status conference.
