Hostage situation leaves one dead in Atchison after law enforcement conducts rescue operation

A hostage standoff in Atchison has led to the shooting death of a St. Joseph, Missouri, man who was believed to have been holding a woman against her will at a home in the northeast Kansas community.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations announced on Monday that Bryson McCray, 36, of St. Joseph, died due to injuries from a gunshot wound that occurred when law enforcement officials conducted a rescue operation of a hostage in the Atchison home.

The incident began Friday evening when a member of the Atchison Police Department responded to a call about a person with a gun who was breaking into an apartment. As the police officer arrived on the scene, a suspect began firing and struck the officer’s patrol vehicle multiple times.

The KBI news release identified the shooter as McCray, who is reported to have then entered a residence in the 500 block of North Ninth Street in Atchison. Additional officers with the Atchison Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the KBI responded to the scene.

Officers learned that a woman known to McCray was being held inside the residence, the KBI said in the release. Negotiations with McCray were unsuccessful, as he allegedly fired multiple shots at law enforcement officers throughout the incident, KBI reported.

At about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, officers undertook a mission to rescue the female hostage. During the rescue attempt, McCray and the hostage were momentarily separated, at which point a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper shot McCray, the KBI reported.

Life-saving measures were performed on McCray at the scene. He was later taken to a Kansas City hospital, where he died on Monday.

The hostage was “safely rescued,” the KBI reported.

The KBI is investigating the shooting. Once the investigation concludes, a public report will be released and information will be forwarded to the Atchison County attorney, the KBI said.
