After a high-speed chase on K-10 Highway on Monday morning, deputies took three juveniles into custody and found a loaded handgun in their vehicle, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that a Eudora police officer spotted a dark-colored Kia at 3:45 a.m. that was driving toward Lawrence on K-10 at about 100 mph. Sheriff’s deputies then located the vehicle, which was now traveling at about 90 mph and wasn’t staying in its lane.

Deputies tried to pull the Kia over, but it fled from them, the release said. Eventually, deputies were able to stop the Kia near West 27th Street and the Youth Sports Complex with a “tactical vehicle intervention,” a technique where a deputy uses their patrol vehicle to nudge the fleeing vehicle in an effort to spin it out and stop it.

After the Kia stopped, three male juveniles ran away from the vehicle, but the deputies were able to catch up to them and take them into custody, the release said. In the vehicle, deputies found a loaded handgun.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident and will recommend charges to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, the release said.
