Lawrence judge, former DA candidate among 3 Lawrence residents applying for vacancy on Kansas Court of Appeals
Three Lawrence residents, including a district judge, are among the applicants announced Friday by Gov. Laura Kelly and the Court of Appeals Nominating Commission for a vacancy on the Court of Appeals.
Judge Paul Klepper, attorney Meryl Carver-Allmond and attorney Tonda Hill, who ran unsuccessfully for Douglas County district attorney are under consideration, having met the Jan. 6 deadline to apply.
The nominating commission will interview applicants on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 to fill the vacancy on the appellate court created by the upcoming retirement of Judge Henry Green Jr. Interviews will be held at the Washburn University School of Law and are open to the public.
Under Kansas law, the governor appoints judges to the Court of Appeals subject to confirmation by the Kansas Senate. The commission will review each applicant’s background and qualifications, conduct interviews, then submit three nominees for the governor to consider.
The interview schedule will be announced at a later date.
