Lawrence adds 3 more inches to week’s snow total; slight chance of more precipitation over weekend

The snowfall overnight Thursday caused minimal disruption compared with the foot of snow that blanketed Lawrence at the beginning of the week, but it was enough to complicate driving and to close area schools once again.

Lawrence schools have been closed every day this week except for Thursday.

The Lawrence area received around 3 inches of snow, measured at Clinton Lake, according to meteorologist Kyle Poage with the National Weather Service in Topeka. Temperatures in coming days, from the low to mid-30s, should help melt some of the accumulated snow, but there’s a slight chance — Poage said about 20% — that Saturday evening could see a bit more snow and possibly freezing rain.

Depending on the exact nature of the precipitation, roads could turn slippery Saturday evening, and drivers should use caution.

Lawrence’s snowy landscape, while not good for driving, has produced some Arctic features beyond the traditional snowmen, notably a sizable igloo at South Park.
