A 37-year-old Michigan man was arrested Wednesday afternoon at a Lawrence credit union and has since been charged with felony identity theft and forgery for allegedly trying to steal thousands of dollars.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to Mid America Credit Union, 550 Wakarusa Drive, for a report of a man attempting to pass a forged check. Employees at the business reported that they had been notified by a branch in another city that the suspect had come to their location and obtained a check for several thousand dollars using false identification and purporting to be another bank customer, according to Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department. Bank employees at the Lawrence branch recognized the man when he came in and attempted to cash the check. Bank staff stalled the man until officers arrived and eventually arrested him without incident, Fennelly said.

The exact amount of money involved in the incident and the location of the other bank branch were not disclosed.

The man is identified in the jail’s booking log as Dorian Lavon Pierce, of Romulus, Michigan. He was scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court Thursday afternoon.
