A Topeka man facing two rape counts in Douglas County District Court was set for a preliminary hearing Friday but instead told the court that the parties were contemplating a resolution short of trial.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Ricardo Leal told Judge Sally Pokorny that the state would be filing an amended complaint against Tyler Patterson, but he did not indicate what the new complaint would say or when it would be filed.
Patterson’s attorney, Angela Keck, told the court that plea negotiations were in the works and that she would look into a criminal mediation process.
Keck also asked for Patterson to be released from house arrest, citing his youth — he was 18 at the time of the alleged crimes — and his good behavior while in custody. He is currently out of jail on a $75,000 bond and is on house arrest and subject to GPS monitoring.
As the Journal-World reported, Patterson is accused of raping a 14-year-old girl twice in Douglas County in 2024. He was arrested on April 21 in Topeka.
Leal did not immediately agree to Patterson’s release from house arrest, saying he wanted to consult with pretrial services first. Pokorny said that she would reach out to that office.
Patterson’s next court date is Feb. 11.
