In a rare jury trial involving a juvenile defendant, Douglas County jurors on Wednesday acquitted a teenager of two counts of aggravated assault.
Jurors reached the not-guilty verdicts on Wednesday morning after a two-day trial.
The felony offenses were alleged to have occurred in October 2024 and reportedly involved a gun.
The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office was represented by Assistant DA Devin Canfield, in the courtroom of Judge Sally Pokorny.
The 17-year-old defendant, who has had multiple run-ins with the law, according to court records, most of which are sealed because of the boy’s juvenile status, was represented by Mark Hartman.
Hartman also represented Derrick Del Reed, a Lawrence teen who was tried as an adult and who was acquitted in 2024 of first-degree murder in the shooting death of 14-year-old Kamarjay Shaw.
