A Lawrence Police Department patrol vehicle is pictured June 28, 2022.
A woman was recovering Monday morning after attempting to free her Chihuahua from an attack by another dog. The Chihuahua did not survive, and the woman suffered a severe bite wound on her arm, a broken finger and several other minor wounds, according to Lawrence police.
The attack occurred just before 2 p.m. Sunday at Centennial Skate Park. When officers arrived, they found the attacking dog had been pinned down by men who had witnessed the attack.
Officers took over and got control of the dog by creating a makeshift muzzle from a leash, while other officers tended to the victim and began an investigation.
Officers learned the woman, who is in her 70s, was walking her three dogs when the unleashed dog attacked the Chihuahua. The woman’s other two dogs were not harmed.
Officers took the dog who initiated the incident to the Humane Society, along with the deceased dog.
The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital, accompanied by one of her dogs. The third dog had run off, but officers later found it and brought it to her home.
Officers worked to identify the owner of the dog who initiated the attack, but have not been able to make contact with him yet, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
