Man arrested after reports of a wrong-way driver on U.S. 59

Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Lawrence man early Sunday after receiving reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on U.S. Highway 59.

According to news release from the sheriff’s office, dispatchers received a call before 3 a.m. from a motorist who reported a northbound driver in the southbound lane. The caller said they had to swerve off the highway to avoid a collision with the wrong-way driver.

A deputy stopped a vehicle north of North 650 Road, but the suspect drove forward, striking the patrol vehicle at a low speed before deputies got him out of the vehicle and detained. No injuries were reported, and vehicle damage appeared minor, according to the release.

According the Douglas County Jail booking log, Ulices Deaquino Altamirano, 23, was arrested at 2:51 a.m. at mile marker 146 on U.S. Highway 59 on suspicion of DUI, driving with an open container, interference with a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and other charges.
