A woman was arrested Thursday evening in East Lawrence on suspicion of beating another woman with a baseball bat.
Lawrence police were called shortly after 7 p.m. to the 800 block of Delaware Street, where three unhoused women had apparently set up a camp in the nearby woods, according to LPD spokeswoman Laura McCabe.
“From what we gathered initially, all were together and an argument occurred,” McCabe said. “Ultimately, one woman hit another with a baseball bat quite a few times.”
The woman ended up with several wounds, including at least one laceration to the head that was bleeding badly, McCabe said.
Emergency workers treated the woman at the scene and took her to the hospital. She was alert and speaking with officers at the time, McCabe said.
When officers arrived, they saw the suspect and arrested her without incident.
The Douglas County Jail log shows that 36-year-old Jolene Jeanette Harrell, whose address is listed as the Lawrence Community Shelter, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery.
Court records indicate that Harrell was charged Friday morning with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The charges list two separate victims in the incident.
