Crews fight overnight house fire on Indiana Street; cause under investigation

Lawrence firefighters responded to a house fire early Friday morning on Indiana Street.

Initial reports to the Douglas County Emergency Communications Center indicated that the back porch of the residence at 408 Indiana Street was on fire, with flames spreading to the main structure.

As firefighters arrived, heavy fire was already showing from the rear of the three-story home, according to a news release from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical. Crews quickly searched the residence to confirm that all occupants and a dog had safely evacuated. The heavy volume of fire made the search and operations inside the house difficult, requiring additional crews to assist, the release said.

The incident required over an hour of continuous fire attack and checking for extension throughout the second floor and attic space. Despite challenging conditions, including construction type and significant heat and smoke, crews were successful in stopping the fire spread and keeping it from threatening houses on either side.

The fire was declared under control at 4:40 a.m. No injuries were reported among residents.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by LDCFM investigators.
