In an alley in downtown Lawrence on Tuesday, two businesses’ windows were broken and a man told police that he was stabbed in the arm, and police say they’re still trying to figure out what happened.

A social media post on Tuesday morning by the Lawrence Police Department said police responded around 4:45 a.m. to an alley near Ninth and Massachusetts streets after the man reported that he had been stabbed in the arm.

According to the post, the man told police he was sleeping in the alley and awoke to another man yelling. Then, he said he was stabbed in the arm and the yelling man fled. Police also said on Tuesday morning that two businesses in the same alley had broken windows but that they didn’t know if the incidents were related.

Then, on Tuesday afternoon, police updated the post, saying that they had “identified inconsistencies in the information initially gathered at the scene” and that “We’ve talked with the businesses involved and will follow through on damage reports and any new leads.”

Police said the man was treated by medics and taken to an area hospital, and that he was expected to recover. They said they had not identified a suspect as of Tuesday afternoon.
