St. John’s Mexican Fiesta to feature food, Latin jazz, dancing and carnival games

St. John’s annual Mexican Fiesta on Saturday will feature Mexican food, Latin jazz music, dancers and carnival games.

The fiesta will run from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at St John’s Catholic Parish, 1234 Kentucky St. Singers Alejandro López and Ylyosil Marcano are scheduled to perform at 5 p.m. followed by the Kansas City-based dance group Grupo Folklorico Izcalli at 6:30 p.m. The last performance of the night at 8:30 p.m. is the KC Latin Jazz All-Stars featuring Pablo Sanhueza, according to a press release from the church.

Food at the fiesta includes authentic Mexican tacos, tostadas and burritos with vegetarian options available. Alcohol will be served at the event with multiple types of beer and margaritas. Children attending the event can expect carnival games and confetti eggs, according to the release.

The money raised by the fiesta is used to fund a Spanish language program at St. John’s School and a scholarship fund for post-secondary education for Mexican youth in Lawrence, according to the event’s website.

Organizers encourage attendees to use cash, but credit card readers are available. No pets are allowed.
