Man arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder after fight near the Lawrence Community Shelter

One Lawrence Community Shelter resident is dead and another has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder after a fight at an intersection near the shelter on Tuesday, according to Lawrence police.

Law enforcement responded to the intersection of East 25th Terrace and Franklin Road around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses reported two men fighting, according to a news release from the Lawrence Police Department. A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy who was the first to arrive saw two men on the ground, one of them unconscious.

According to the release, Christopher Allen Lickteig, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene. George Luke Miller, 34, was detained at the scene and later was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Police do not believe weapons were used during the fight, and the circumstances that led to the fight, including whether the men knew each other, were being investigated. Both were staying at the shelter, the release said.

Miller remains in the Douglas County Jail and is being held without bond.
