A Lawrence man was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday in connection with a series of domestic violence incidents in which he was alleged to have punched, cut and dragged a woman by her hair.

The man, Yusaf Ali Austin, 50, was originally charged with 12 felonies, including two counts of aggravated battery, one count of aggravated burglary, one count of tampering with a GPS tracking device, three counts of criminal threat, five counts of felony domestic battery, and misdemeanor counts of violating a protective order, criminal damage, and obstruction, as the Journal-World reported.

He pleaded guilty in October of 2023 to one count of attempted aggravated battery, one count of aggravated battery and one count of criminal threat, all felonies. The charges relate to incidents in February and March of 2021. The remaining charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement with the state.

On Thursday, Austin was sentenced to 43 months for the attempted aggravated battery charge, 12 months for the aggravated battery charge and six months for the criminal threat charge, with the sentences to run consecutively for a total of 61 months, or just over five years, according to court records. He was awarded 989 days of time served, about 33 months, since his arrest in May of 2021.

According to court records, Austin has felony convictions in Douglas County for attempted battery on a law enforcement officer and obstruction from 2018, and aggravated assault in 1993. He was convicted of felony aggravated battery in Johnson County in 2007.
